We’re just a couple weeks away until the return of the Bluth family on Arrested Development‘s fifth season, but fans won’t get the entire story right away. Instead, the upcoming season will be split in two parts according to Entertainment Weekly.
The season as a whole will consist of 16 episodes, but the first half will premiere on May 29 while the remaining half at some point later this year. This is a strategy Netflix has adopted for some of its shows recently, such as The Get Down, The Ranch and the final season of Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt. No word has been given as to why the series is being split in two, especially as there was no indication of such a move with the release of the trailer and premiere date, but presumably they aren’t done finalizing the whole season due to the busy schedules of its large cast.
While Season 4 premiered in 2013, Netflix and show creator Mitch Hurwitz recut the season as a bit of a primer for fans, making it much more traditional for the series’ old narrative by editing it chronologically and with the episodes focusing on the whole family as opposed to the original intent of one character per episode.

In the aftermath of Cinco de Quatro, the Bluth family are all facing one question, that no one quite has the answer to; where is Lucille Two? As this Netflix (semi) original series returns, the Bluths are back together, and finally getting the award they think they deserve – for family of the year. A development which will help Lindsay as she begins her campaign for Congress, to become ‘part of the problem’. But whatever happens, Michael will always come back to save the family. Probably. Arrested Development centers around Michael Bluth (Jason Bateman) and his eccentric family comprised of his son George Michael (Michael Cera), his father George Bluth Sr. (Jeffrey Tambor), his mother Lucille (Jessica Walter), his brothers George Oscar Bluth II (Will Arnett), Buster Bluth (Tony Hale) and sister Lindsay Funke (Portia de Rossi), and Lindsay’s husband Tobias (David Cross) and their daughter Maeby (Alia Shawkat).
