Avatar 2 title confirmed, first trailer attached to Marvel’s Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness

April 28, 2022 by Gary Collinson

This may be hard to believe after so many delays, but it seems that the first of James Cameron’s four Avatar sequels really is going to arrive this year – so much so that Disney has confirmed during its CinemaCon presentation that the trailer for Avatar: The Way of Water will be attached to next week’s Marvel Studios sequel Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.

The Avatar 2 title reveal may not come as too much of a surprise to those who’ve been following the sequels’ development over the years as it actually leaked online way back in 2018, along with the alleged titles of Avatar 3 through 5 – Avatar: The Seed Bearer, Avatar: The Tulkun Rider, and Avatar: The Quest for Eywa.

In addition to the title announcement and trailer news, the studio also announced another theatrical re-release for 2009’s Avatar from September 23rd (which should edge the film a little further ahead of Avengers: Endgame in their ongoing battle for all time box office supremacy), as well as sharing a brief synopsis for The Way of Water:

Set more than a decade after the events of the first film, “Avatar: The Way of Water” begins to tell the story of the Sully family (Jake, Neytiri, and their kids), the trouble that follows them, the lengths they go to keep each other safe, the battles they fight to stay alive,  and the tragedies they endure.

Avatar: The Way of Water is directed by James Cameron and sees Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldana, Joel David Moore, CCH Pounder, Matt Gerald, Dileep Rao, Stephen Lang, Giovanni Ribisi, and Sigourney Weaver all reprising their roles from the 2009 blockbuster, while new additions to the cast include Kate Winslet, Oona Chaplin, Cliff Curtis, Britain Dalton, Filip Geljo, Jamie Flatters, Bailey Bass, Trinity Bliss, Jack Champion, Duane Evans Jr., Edie Falco, Brendan Cowell, Michelle Yeoh, Jemaine Clement, Keston John, and CJ Jones.

Avatar: The Way of Water is set for release on December 16th.
