Avengers: Infinity War may top Star Wars: The Force Awakens for record box office opening weekend

April 16, 2018 by Gary Collinson

Marvel’s Avengers: Infinity War hit tracking earlier this month with a projected domestic box office opening weekend of around $200 million.

Since then however, it has been revealed that Infinity War is outselling the COMBINED pre-sales of the past seven Marvel Cinematic Universe movies – Black Panther, Thor: Ragnarok, Spider-Man: Homecoming, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, Doctor Strange, Captain America: Civil War and Ant-Man – at Fandango, which has now led to projections of a possible record opening for the superhero epic.

According to Box Office Pro, estimate for the North American debut of Infinity War now ranges between $235 million and $255 million. At the lower end of the scale, it would surpass Star Wars: The Last Jedi ($220 million) for the second-biggest opening in history, and if it manages to reach – or exceed – the top end, then it will have dethrones Star Wars: The Force Awakens ($248 million) for the biggest weekend of all time.

The site also predicts a total domestic haul in the region of $565 million to $650 million. That would leave it trailing February’s smash hit Black Panther, which has grossed a whopping $673.8 million in North America, and $1.31 billion worldwide. 2012’s The Avengers remains Marvel’s biggest global success with $1.519 billion, although Infinity War will likely have something to say about that.

An unprecedented cinematic journey ten years in the making and spanning the entire Marvel Cinematic Universe, Marvel Studios’ “Avengers: Infinity War” brings to the screen the ultimate, deadliest showdown of all time. The Avengers and their Super Hero allies must be willing to sacrifice all in an attempt to defeat the powerful Thanos before his blitz of devastation and ruin puts an end to the universe.

Avengers: Infinity War opens on April 27th 2018 and will feature an all-star cast including Robert Downey Jr. (Iron Man), Chris Evans (Captain America), Mark Ruffalo (Hulk), Chris Hemsworth (Thor), Scarlett Johansson (Black Widow), Jeremy Renner (Hawkeye), Chadwick Boseman (Black Panther), Tom Holland (Spider-Man), Sebastian Stan (Winter Soldier), Anthony Mackie (Falcon), Paul Rudd (Ant-Man), Paul Bettany (Vision), Elizabeth Olsen (Scarlet Witch), Don Cheadle (War Machine), Josh Brolin (Thanos), Benedict Cumberbatch (Doctor Strange), Benedict Wong (Wong), Chris Pratt (Star-Lord), Zoe Saldana (Gamora), Dave Bautista (Drax), Bradley Cooper (Rocket), Sean Gunn (Rocket, Kraglin), Vin Diesel (Groot), Karen Gillan (Nebula), Pom Klementieff (Mantis), Tessa Thompson (Valkyrie), Tom Hiddleston (Loki), Samuel L. Jackson (Nick Fury), Cobie Smulders (Maria Hill), Benicio Del Toro (The Collector), Danai Gurira (Okoye), Winston Duke (M’Baku) and Peter Dinklage and Terry Notary in as-yet-unrevealed roles.
