Barbenheimer posts huge second weekend at the box office

July 30, 2023 by Matt Rodgers

It appears the Barbie has the legs and Oppenheimer‘s blast radius is spreading at the box-office, because Barbenheimer posted huge numbers during their second weekends of release.

Greta Gerwig’s existential ensemble comedy once again took the top spot with a whopping take of $93 million between Friday and Sunday. Takings for Barbie dipped a meagre 43% from its opening weekend, a drop usually reserved for event-movie blockbusters with Star Wars or Marvel in the title.

After just 10 days in North American theatres the Margot Robbie-led phenomenon has grossed $351.4 million, making it the fourth-biggest domestic release of 2023. Its worldwide cume stands at over $750 million, which means it currently ranks as the third-largest film of the year.

The other half of this strange cinematic occurrence is Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer, which continues to keep pace with its colourful rival by making over $10 million at the domestic box-office for 10-days in a row, a feat never achieved by an R-rated movie.

Oppenheimer took an explosive $46.6 million over the weekend, lifting its domestic total to $174 million, and $400 million at the worldwide box-office.

The two new efforts released into multiplexes during the Barbenheimer fallout were Disney’s remake of Haunted Mansion (read our ★★ review here), which landed softly in third place with $24.6 million ($33 million worldwide), and A24’s Antipodean horror-film Talk To Me (read our ★★★★ review here), which backed up the buzz with a decent $10 million.
