Ever since the release of Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice – and the Sad Affleck meme – there’s been intense speculation surrounding Ben Affleck’s continued involvement as The Dark Knight in the DC Extended Universe.
After opting to exit the director’s chair on The Batman, with Matt Reeves stepping in as his replacement, we’ve had numerous reports claiming that Affleck won’t be donning the cape and cowl for Reeves’ planned Batman trilogy, although this has been denied by both Affleck and Reeves at various times.
Well, with Justice League now just a week away, the question has been raised once again, and during an interview with Extra, Affleck was asked if he’ll see him taking his Batman appearances up to five (he’s at three already if you count Suicide Squad). His response?
“I don’t know about that,” replied Affleck. “We’ll see what the future holds.”
There are a few possibilities here: both Warner Bros. and Affleck could be waiting to see how Justice League is received before deciding their next step, or Affleck could be holding off on committing until he sees Matt Reeves’ script. Of course, if it has already been decided that he won’t return for The Batman, then it’s also possible that the studio wants to keep it under wraps so as not to detract from Justice League. Hopefully we’ll get a definitive answer soon so the speculation can be put to bed.
