Benedict Cumberbatch’s Doctor Strange to appear in Marvel’s Spider-Man 3

October 9, 2020 by Gary Collinson

With Marvel Studios gearing up to go into production on its next Spider-Man movie, the cast of the as-yet-untitled follow-up to Spider-Man: Homecoming and Spider-Man: Far From Home continues to grow with the news that Benedict Cumberbatch is set to reprise his role as Doctor Strange alongside Tom Holland’s web-slinger.

As revealed by The Hollywood Reporter, Cumberbatch’s Sorcerer Supreme will act in the mentor role that was saw from Robert Downey Jr.’s Tony Stark in Homecoming and Samuel L. Jackson’s Nick Fury in Far From Home.

Cumberbatch is currently preparing to begin shooting his next Marvel outing, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, which is slated to begin production in the UK this month.

That film is set to blow open the door the Marvel “multiverse”, and given that it’s also been announced this week that The Amazing Spider-Man 2 star Jamie Foxx is set to reprise the role of Electro, speculation is now running rampant that this Multiverse will include a version of the Spider-Verse.

Spider-Man 3 marks the first movie from the renewed deal between Disney and Sony to share the wall-crawler, with Marvel Studios chief Kevin Feige stating during that announcement that Spidey “happens to be the only hero with the superpower to cross cinematic universes”.

So, could Doctor Strange be the key to that ability? Is this how Marvel and Sony might link Holland’s Spider-Man with Tom Hardy’s Venom and the rest of the awkwardly-named ‘Sony Pictures Universe of Marvel Characters’? Let us know your thoughts and predictions on our social channels @FlickeringMyth…

Spider-Man 3 is currently slated for release in December 2021, and sees Jon Watts directing a cast that includes Tom Holland (Peter Parker), Zendaya (MJ), Jacon Batalon (Ned Leeds), Tony Revolori (Flash Thompson), Benedict Cumberbatch (Doctor Strange) and Jamie Foxx (Electro).
