Bill Murray talks Ghostbusters cameo and praises the reboot

June 11, 2016 by Gary Collinson

It was certainly a bit of a surprise when Bill Murray signed on for a cameo in Paul Feig’s female-led reboot of Ghostbusters, given that he’d been against the idea of reuniting with his original co-stars for a movie for 25 years. Nevertheless, Murray will be returning to the franchise next month, and he’s been speaking on Jimmy Kimmel Live about his decision.

“I thought about [the cameo] for a very long time,” said Murray. “Like, many, many months. No, that’s not right. I was seriously thinking about this for years, really … It kept eating at me, and I really respect those girls. And then I started to feel like if I didn’t do this movie, maybe somebody would write a bad review or something, thinking there was some sort of disapproval [on my part].”

He then went on to praise the movie, stating that: ““When you see the film, and you’ll delight in the film, it sort of rumbles along in the beginning. You’re going, ‘Oh God, are they going to pull this thing off?’ I felt like a stepfather to the whole thing. There is no quit in these girls. This is a tough movie to pull off, because it’s a big concept. There’s a lot on the plate – there’s a lot of expectation. [Dan Aykroyd], and I and Annie [Potts] and Ernie [Hudson], were just screaming, cheering like we were at a sporting event at the end of it.”

Thirty years after the original film took the world by storm, Ghostbusters is back and fully rebooted for a new generation. Director Paul Feig combines all the paranormal fighting elements that made the original franchise so beloved with a cast of new characters, played by the funniest actors working today. Get ready to watch them save the world this summer!

Ghostbusters is set for release on July 11th in the UK and on July 15th in the US and sees Paul Feig (Spy) directing a cast that also includes Kristin Wiig (Bridesmaids), Melissa McCarthy (Spy), Leslie Jones (Saturday Night Live), Kate McKinnon (Saturday Night Live), Chris Hemsworth (Avengers: Age of Ultron), Andy Garcia (The Godfather: Part III), Michael K. Williams (Boardwalk Empire), Matt Walsh (Veep), Cecily Strong (Saturday Night Live), Neil Casey (Saturday Night Live) and Charles Dance (Game of Thrones). Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Ernie Hudson, Sigourney Weaver and Annie Potts are also all confirmed to cameo.
