Black Widow hits $100 million domestically, over $200 million at the global office

July 15, 2021 by EJ Moreno

Typically, crossing $200 million is nothing for a Marvel Studios film. Hell, oftentimes an MCU project can make that in an opening weekend globally. But after more than a year away from cinemas and the ongoing pandemic, this type of money is a good sign.

Yes, Black Widow, the latest from Disney and Marvel Studios, is dominating at the global box office, and if things keep going as they are, it could sit at the number one spot for a second week. Early industry projections see Black Widow adding as much as $30 million in its second weekend, which puts it ahead of tracking for new releases like Space Jam: A New Legacy and Escape Room: Tournament of Champions.

Statistics show that about 20% of cinemas in the U.S. are still closed, and we see international territories like parts of Southeast Asia and Latin America closing again. So when you notice in only six days in the states, Black Widow has become the fastest pandemic-era release to cross $100 million, that’s impressive.

The Marvel film joins Warner Bros’ Godzilla vs. Kong, Universal’s F9, and Paramount’s A Quiet Place Part II as the only films to hit over $100 million domestically during the pandemic.

The Marvel superhero film also brought in over $60 million from its Disney+ Premier Access, which costs $30 per account. While that number is impressive, don’t get used to seeing Disney+ streaming numbers as reports say Disney will not disclose more information in the future.

In Marvel Studios’ action-packed spy thriller “Black Widow,” Natasha Romanoff, aka Black Widow, confronts the darker parts of her ledger when a dangerous conspiracy with ties to her past arises. Pursued by a force that will stop at nothing to bring her down, Natasha must deal with her history as a spy and the broken relationships left in her wake long before she became an Avenger.

Black Widow is directed by Cate Shortland (Lore) and sees Scarlett Johansson reprising her role as Natasha Romanoff alongside William Hurt as Thaddeus Ross, Florence Pugh (Fighting With My Family) as Yelena Belova, O-T Fagbenle (The Handmaid’s Tale) as Mason, David Harbour (Stranger Things) as Alexei Shostakov/Red Guardian, Rachel Weisz (The Favourite) as Melina Vostokoff and Ray Winstone (Sexy Beast) as Dreykov.
