Blumhouse and Universal confirm new, modern Dracula film with Karyn Kusama as director

March 11, 2020 by EJ Moreno

The Universal Monsters are making a comeback after the success of the latest entry, The Invisible Man. The Hollywood Reporter confirmed late Tuesday evening that Universal Pictures and Blumhouse will team up to tackle the iconic Dracula.

Modern horror master Karyn Kusama (Jennifer’s Body, Destroyer), is said to be directing the project. Sources also tell THR that Matt Manfredi and Phil Hay, frequent collaborators with Kusama, are writing the script. Jason Blum is currently crafting an update on the vampire story and will serve as producer as sources tell The Hollywood Reporter that the studio is looking to follow up on the momentum from The Invisible Man.

With a budget of $7 million and a current global haul of $102.2 million, the Leigh Whannell-directed Invisible Man is a bonafide hit for Universal Pictures. The studio is finally finding its footing with adapting its legendary horror stories after failing to launch the Dark Universe with 2017’s The Mummy. This news comes hot on the heels of the announcement of an untitled James Wan project for the studio, while other Universal Monsters-related projects in the works include Dark Army, Renfield and The Invisible Woman.
