Bob Iger forcing Marvel Studios to “reduce output” in attempt to re-focus superhero brand

February 11, 2024 by EJ Moreno

Marvel Studios slipped more into quantity over quality in the last few years, looking to put out the most content instead of the best. Everyone has noticed that, including the Walt Disney Company CEO Bob Iger. That’s why the executive plans to stick to his plan and scale back the amount of work being pumped out of Marvel Studios.

During a recent Q&A with Disney stockholders and press for the first-quarter earnings report, Iger took time from the surprise announcement of Moana 2 to open up about the future of the MCU.

Iger said on the phone meeting, “I’d say we’re leaning a little bit more into sequels and franchises. I think given the environment and given what it takes to get people out of their homes to see a film. Leaning on franchises that are familiar is actually a smart thing. In our zeal to greatly increase volume, partially tied to this [desire] to chase more global subs for our streaming platform, some of our studios lost a little focus.”

One of the significant steps is to take a step back, with Iger adding: “So, the first step that we’ve taken is that we’ve reduced volume, we reduced output, particularly in Marvel.”

At the time of reporting, only one Marvel Studios movie is slated for 2024 with Deadpool 3 due to be released this Summer. As for the Disney+ series, the MCU has one live-action project incoming in late 2024 in Agatha: Darkhold Diaries, along with more Marvel’s What If…? and the new animated series Eyes of Wakanda, Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man and Marvel Zombies.

Will the Marvel Cinematic Universe benefit from scaling back its output? Let us know your thoughts on our social channels @FlickeringMyth…
