Bryce Dallas Howard explains how tricky it was to shoot the Baby Yoda soup scene

December 4, 2019 by Samuel Brace

Baby Yoda continues to delight the internet with adorable and meme-worthy moments and now director Bryce Dallas Howard has discussed one of The Mandalorian‘s latest.

Ever since the creature affectionately dubbed ‘Baby Yoda’ debuted on The Mandalorian, fans have had a constant source of cute and funny scenes to enjoy. The latest moment to capture the internet’s delight was when Baby Yoda interrupts the Mando’s fight with Cara Dune by sipping a cup of soup as he watches on.

While the scene was certainly funny, it was tricky to figure out how things would work on screen with the puppet. Speaking to Variety, director of the episode Bryce Dallas Howard said:

“When we were shooting that fight just before, so much rested on Gina because Pedro at that point was on rehearsal for another show. It wasn’t like I was working with Pedro on a day-to-day basis, so Gina was the face of the episode. Working with Mando’s stunt double and body double it was exciting because Gina was able to do all that action and we could lean into it. That day was all about that brutal fight: Gina and Mando’s stunt double were just destroying each other. And then it gets to Baby sipping his soup and everything else goes away, all these amazing feats of athleticism and martial arts, and all this stuff just becomes Baby with soup and all we wanted to do was a zillion takes of how Baby was going to drink his soup. Would he drink it with one hand? With two hands? Sipping it a lot? Sipping it a little bit? A Baby sip, a hearty sip, we had so many options to contend with. Baby just wins every scene he’s in.”

The creature is certainly a scene-stealer and that doesn’t look like it’s going to change anytime soon. Fingers crossed there is plenty more to enjoy from Baby Yoda in the next episode.
