Captain America 4 writer teases Sam and Bucky’s MCU futures

May 21, 2021 by Gary Collinson

No sooner had Sam Wilson accepted his destiny as the new Captain America in the season finale of The Falcon and the Winter Soldier than it was reported that showrunner Malcolm Spellman had signed on to write the script for a fourth movie in the Cap franchise.

So far, Marvel Studios is yet to confirm the reports and officially announce Captain America 4, so while Spellman is unable to talk about the project, he has teased what he thinks the future may have in store for Anthony Mackie’s Sam Wilson and Sebastian Stan’s Bucky Barnes.

“I believe that’s going to be his conflict moving forward,” Spellman told Everyone Loves a Good Story, referring to Sam’s lack of superpowers and how it will impact his story going forward. “In the action genre, what made Die Hard a classic wasn’t who Bruce Willis beat, it was what he went through to beat them. He’s walking through glass with no shoes on, you know what I’m saying? That’s what people can identify with: ‘This motherfucker is just like me and taking on the bad guys.’ What better hero than that to root for?”

Meanwhile, speaking to The Playlist, Spellman addressed how Bucky’s future is much more unclear, stating that: “I think Bucky is free in a way. Even coming out of Wakanda, he still wasn’t totally free. He was freed programming, but I believe Bucky is free now in a way. Look at the way he smiled at the end; he got a family, he’s invited to the cook-out, as we say in the community. He is free in a way that I think we haven’t seen, and that leads to a lot of possibilities for him.”

Hopefully we’ll get some official news on Captain America 4 soon, but with Marvel’s slate packed through until the end of 2022 (and beyond), we’re probably still a couple of years away from seeing Sam Wilson’s Cap take flight on the big screen.
