Captain Marvel producer confirms that Yon-Rogg will appear in the movie

January 13, 2019 by Gary Collinson

If you’ve been paying close attention to all of the news about Captain Marvel – particularly the merchandise – then this will come as little surprise, but producer Jonathan Schwartz has confirmed to Screen Rant that the Kree villain Yon-Rogg is set to feature in March’s superhero blockbuster.

“Yon-Rogg does pop up, yeah,” admitted Schwartz. “He’s an important part of the mythology.”

For those unfamiliar with Captain Marvel mythology, Yon-Rogg is a Kree military commander and rival of Mar-Vell, the original Captain Marvel. He’s key to Carol Danvers’ origin, as she gains her powers from the Psyche-Magnitron device after being kidnapped by Yon-Rogg.

Now, if you don’t want any SPOILERS for Captain Marvel, stop reading now. Like seriously. Don’t scroll down.

Despite the initial casting report and a promo poster claiming that Jude Law had secured the role of Mar-Vell, it’s been confirmed by both Funko Pop! Vinyl and Marvel Legends Series figures that Law’s ‘Star Commander’ is actually none other than Yon-Rogg.

So, why all the secrecy? Well, it seems a pretty safe bet that Brie Larson’s Carol Danvers and Law’s Yon-Rogg aren’t going to be Starforce teammates for long, and so Marvel has presumably kept his character name under wraps in an effort to protect this “twist” should Law turn out to be the film’s main antagonist.

I guess the question now is, will Mar-Vell make an appearance in the movie, and if so who is playing him? Or could Marvel have decided to combine Mar-Vell and Yon-Rogg into one character for the MCU? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below or tweet us @FlickeringMyth.

Set in the 1990s, Marvel Studios’ Captain Marvel is an all-new adventure from a previously unseen period in the history of the Marvel Cinematic Universe that follows the journey of Carol Danvers as she becomes one of the universe’s most powerful heroes. While a galactic war between two alien races reaches Earth, Danvers finds herself and a small cadre of allies at the center of the maelstrom.

Captain Marvel is being directed by Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck (Mississippi Grind) and sees Brie Larson (Kong: Skull Island) leading the cast as Carol Danvers alongside Samuel L. Jackson (The Avengers), Ben Mendelsohn (Rogue One: A Star Wars Story), Djimon Hounsou (Guardians of the Galaxy), Lee Pace (Guardians of the Galaxy), Lashana Lynch (Fast Girls), Gemma Chan (Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them), Algenis Perez Soto (Sambá), Rune Temte (Eddie The Eagle), McKenna Grace (I, Tonya), Annette Bening (American Beauty), Ana Ayora (The Big Wedding), Vik Sahay (Chuck), Kenneth Mitchell (Star Trek: Discovery), Chuku Modo (The Good Doctor), Clark Gregg (The Avengers) and Jude Law (Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald). It is set for release on March 8th.
