Carol and 45 Years lead London Critics’ Circle Awards nominations

December 15, 2015 by Tom Beasley

Todd Haynes’ romantic drama Carol continues to dominate awards season after coming out on top in the nominations for the London Critics’ Circle Awards, with seven nods.

Carol is the frontrunner for the Best Film prize and also secured nominations for Best Director, Best Actress (twice), Best Screenplay and Technical Achievement of the Year (twice).

The closest competitor to the dominant drama was Andrew Haigh’s intimate British film 45 Years, which picked up nominations for veteran stars Tom Courtenay and Charlotte Rampling as well as citations for Best Film, Best Director, Best British Actress and Best British Film.

Elsewhere in the London Critics’ Circle nominations, Mad Max: Fury Road continued its considerable momentum with nods for Best Film and Best Director for George Miller.

Pixar animation Inside Out and documentary successes Amy and The Look of Silence made their way into the Best Film category, suggesting that they may have more of a chance at the Oscars than other ceremonies have suggested.

Notably, awards season favourites The Danish Girl and The Hateful Eight missed out completely, allowing Tom Hardy to slot into the Best Actor field for Legend – a prize he won at the BIFAs a few weeks ago.
