Christoph Waltz in talks for James Cameron and Robert Rodriguez’s Alita: Battle Angel

August 28, 2016 by Gary Collinson

Originally published August 28, 2016. Updated April 15, 2018.

Variety is reporting that Christoph Waltz is in talks to join Alita: Battle Angel, 20th Century Fox’s upcoming manga adaptation from director Robert Rodriguez and producer James Cameron.

Should a deal be reached, the Oscar-winner will join Rosa Salazar in the cast, with Salazar playing the titular Alita, a cyborg rescued from a scrapyard and reassembled by cybersurgeon Doctor Dyson Ido, the role earmarked for Waltz.

Cameron has long been keen to bring Battle Angel Alita to the big screen, and was attached to direct before opting instead to focus on his many planned Avatar sequels. Production on the film is expected to get underway this year, with a budget of between $175 million and $200 million, and it is slated for release on July 20th 2018.
