Christopher Landon exits Scream 7, slasher sequel now without director or stars

December 23, 2023 by EJ Moreno

Scream 7 is in a world of trouble. Not only has the slasher sequel lost its two leads, but now the director has stepped away.

News broke Saturday before the Christmas holiday that Christopher Landon left the seventh Scream movie after weeks of drama surrounding the project.

The filmmaker took to social media to address his departure: “I guess now is as good a time as any to announce I formally exited Scream 7 weeks ago. This will disappoint some and delight others. It was a dream job that turned into a nightmare. And my heart did break for everyone involved. Everyone. But it’s time to move on.”

Landon adds, “I have nothing more to add to the conversation other than I hope Wes’ legacy thrives and lifts above the din of a divided world. What he and Kevin created is something amazing, and I was honored to have even the briefest moment basking in their glow.”

In November, the news of Spyglass firing actor Melissa Barrera from the  Scream sequel rocked the film community, with the reason stemming from social media posts Barrera made that the studio found antisemitic. Only a day later, Jenna Ortega left the project as well. Then-director Christoper Landon did not take the news well, going onto social media in a now-deleted post saying, “Everything sucks. Stop yelling.”

Landon only recently joined the franchise, stepping in for directors Radio Silence after they walked away following their Scream comeback movies, Scream 5 and this year’s Scream VI. The long-running slasher franchise has seen better days, with the Radio Silence era having the now-infamous departure of Neve Campbell over pay disputes.

With Landon walking away from Scream and the fanbase getting as toxic as the slasher franchise predicted in Scream 5, it might be time to let the once-acclaimed horror behemoth rest again.
