Christopher Nolan talks Superman and Batman

March 12, 2010 by admin

After huge amounts of (worthy) kudos – not to mention a considerably healthier bank balance – for 2008’s The Dark Knight, director Christopher Nolan has been handed the reigns to DC Comics’ other superhero property – the Last Son of Krypton himself, Kal El. Nolan – who will oversee the project as producer alongside his wife Emma Thomas – has been talking to the Los Angeles Times this week about how he intends to handle the Superman franchise…

“We’re approaching it in a not dissimilar way [to Batman] in terms of trying to find an incredible story in a way that audiences can engage with it the way they engage with contemporary action films,” said Nolan of his and screenwriter David S. Goyer’s plans for the upcoming reboot. “We feel we can do it right. We know the milieu, if you will, we know the genre and how to get it done right.”

Goyer was first announced as writing the script for the film back in February and is rumoured to be joined by Nolan’s brother Jonathan. A while back a source told Latino Review that the story features Lex Luthor and Brainiac as the villains and will not take the form of an origin story. However the film will stand on its own and share no continuity with earlier efforts, so expect wholesale changes to the cast.

Naturally, while talking about Superman the conversation also naturally shifted towards the third instalment of his blockbuster Batman franchise: “My brother is writing a script for me and we’ll wait to see how it turns out…. He’s struggling to put it together into the epic story that you want it to be.”

Well, he certainly knows his audience.

In all this seems like great news for both fans and Warner Bros, who will be hoping Nolan can replicate the magic touch he’s brought to Gotham with the Man of Steel, especially given the disappointment of Bryan Singer’s Superman Returns (2006).
