Cillian Murphy’s Steve to receive theatrical and Netflix release this fall

June 24, 2025 by Ricky Church

Cillian Murphy’s drama Steve has received a theatrical release this fall ahead of its premiere on Netflix. Directed by Tim Mielants (Small Things Like These), the film is based on the novel Shy by Max Porter and sees Murphy as a teacher trying to reach his at-risk students to improve their lives.

Starring alongside Murphy in the film are Jay Lycurgo (Generation Z), Tracey Ullman (The Tracey Ullman Show), Simbi Ajikawo (Top Boy) and Emily Watson (Dune: Prophecy).

Set in the mid-1990s, Steve follows a pivotal day in the life of the titular headteacher and his students at a last-chance reform school amidst a world that has forsaken them. As Steve fights to protect the school’s integrity and impending closure, he grapples with his own mental health. In parallel to Steve’s struggles, troubled teen Shy (Lycurgo) is caught between his past and what lies ahead as he tries to reconcile his inner fragility with his impulse for self-destruction and violence.

Steve will have a limited release in theatres beginning in September with an as yet to be announced release date followed by an October 3rd premiere on Netflix. Murphy is producing through Big Things Films with his partner Alan Moloney.
