Colin Trevorrow turned down Guardians of the Galaxy as he wasn’t “a comic book kid”

September 18, 2019 by Liam Waddington

Director Colin Trevorrow has explained why he turned down the opportunity to helm Guardians of the Galaxy in favour of the Jurassic World series.

In a recent interview with Empire, Trevorrow confirmed he was once in talks with Disney and Marvel Studios to helm Guardians of the Galaxy, but choose not to continue these conversations as he wasn’t a comic book kid growing up.

“I met on Guardians of the Galaxy long, long ago. Yeah, very early. It was a great conversation. I was not a comic book kid. That wasn’t my thing. I was a Star Wars kid, an Indiana Jones kid, a Spielberg kid – that was my thing. So it was a great conversation, but a little bit more of a personal understanding of, you need someone who loved this growing up,” Trevorrow said.

“[They] should be the ones directing these movies. You’ve gotta live and breathe it in the way that I did Jurassic and these films that I get to be involved in now.”

Although Trevorrow turned down this opportunity, it gave the chance for current director of the film series, James Gunn, to jump into the chair and ultimately bring success to the fan-favourite films. Additionally, Trevorrow was given the chance to direct Jurassic World and write and produce Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom which was a dream of his working alongside Steven Spielberg. He’ll also be back to direct 2021’s Jurassic World 3.
