Comic Book Review – American Vampire Anthology #1

August 29, 2013 by admin

Robb Ghag reviews American Vampire Anthology #1…

“You are cordially invited to a party—to die for! This special features eight amazing stories set in the world of American Vampire, with “lost tales,” new characters and old favorites. Don’t miss these stories brought to you by series creators Scott Snyder and Rafael Albuquerque, as well as other awesome comics talent like Becky Cloonan (BATMAN), Gabriel Ba and Fabio Moon (DAYTRIPPER), Jeff Lemire (SWEET TOOTH), Greg Rucka (THE PUNISHER, BATWOMAN), Gail Simone (BATGIRL) and many more! “

I love American Vampire. What else is there to say? Anything that comes out bearing the title has never disappointed, and has always elevated the realm of both Vampires and Comics.

This one shot hosts the “who’s who” of the comics industry all delving into the world of Skinner Sweet and giving us an insight into how the American landscape has changed with the introduction of these immortal bloodsuckers.

Scott Snyder, Rafael Albuquerque, Jason Aaron, Ray Fawkes, Francesco Francavilla, Jeff Lemire, JP Leon, Greg Rucka and Gail Simone just to name a few all lend their talents to this amazing book.

With 10 individual stories, there’s definitely something here for everyone. My particular favorite was Canadian Vampire (although I am Canadian, so that may be biased). Given the fact Jeff Lemire wrote it, his love of Canada truly makes the story stand out among the rest.

They’re all great little individual instances ranging from 1588 all the way up to 1967, depicting specific moments in time, when the European Vampires first came to America all the way up to when the American Vampire roamed the landscape.

I cannot say enough great things about this book, my only criticism would be if you’re not familiar with the world of American Vampire you may be lost by some of the storylines as they do fill in the gaps from some of the previous books, but as a companion piece, this book is a must. Definitely get this book if you can’t get enough of Skinner Sweet.
