Comic Book Review – Chew #54

January 28, 2016 by Jessie Robertson

Jessie Robertson reviews Chew #54…

Amelia feels doom.

This issue of Chew felt really short; although it had a nice rounded out complete story that sort of gave Amelia some time to be center stage once again.

As Chew nears its final issue (which we saw a horse named 60 Issue Run make a cameo) it’s weird how quickly, succinct and to the point the issues have gotten. I’d expect a massive blow out nearly every time but I guess back a few months when the Vampire was brought down, that was pretty big stuff that had been waiting for a conclusion for a long time.

It’s really difficult to write about this month’s book without giving anything away, just suffice to say, we get Tony distracted by an old case as John antagonizes him, and he plays it by the book, as always. The only thing I will say is the prologue reaches out and sort of grabs you by the throat and the book seemingly delivers on that promise.

Chew is an enigma that sort of is the exception to the rule, but most Indy comics are; storylines don’t change that drastically, creators don’t fluctuate, either you like the art style of Chew or you don’t; either you like the narrative or you don’t; either you buy the different food abilities this world is built around or you don’t; but the prologue sort of did hint, as did Amelia, at a possible ending to this book that I hadn’t considered, since it sort of takes place on a different Earth, okay, a way different Earth than we live on.

Rating: 8.5/10 – It’s a simple book, with not a lot of Chew humor, or time for it, but it does pose some big questions and leave some things hanging in the air with major ramifications.
