Comic Book Review – Demi-God #1

April 17, 2018 by Calum Petrie

Calum Petrie reviews Demi-God #1…

There are many different genres of comics – far too many to list on this review. Though if you were to go to the less serious side, somewhere near the satirical, this is where you would find Demi-God. The story is told from the perspective of the lead character, Jason McAndros, about how his slacker lifestyle and wasting his days in a dead end job wound up with him gaining the powers of a Demi-God.

The first issue is a basic origin story, where a normal day is quickly thrown into a whirlwind of violence, pectoral muscles and more douchey facial hair than is warranted in a single super hero.

The events to transform our Joe Nobody into the Demi-God are actually rather comical themselves, where a legendary baseball bat turns out to be the club of Hercules. This alone gives our hero the powers he needs to defeat a mythological beast.

Our protagonist delivers the story to us directly by breaking the fourth wall in the opening pages of the issue. If this does not give you some indication of the type of hero this story is putting forward then you have not read the likes of Deadpool before.

This issue is not going to go down in history with Action Comics #1. This type of super hero is for the casual enjoyment of a reader – let the simple story and rather pretty art work take you back to the era of bodybuilder superheros.

I will give the story credit for moving away from the now normal superhero origin story where the powers are gained by an accident. I look forward to seeing where our over inflated ego of a hero goes to next and what the next issue has for us.
