Comic Book Review – Donald Duck #1

June 8, 2015 by Andrew Newton

Andrew Newton reviews Donald Duck #1…

Mickey Mouse, Goofy, Pluto are all timeless Disney classics but there is one character who stands head and shoulders above the rest – Donald Duck.  Donald is one of those characters whose antics usually result in a rather red faced tantrum with fists flying in all directions.  His speech impediment and angry quacking makes Donald my favourite Disney cartoon character.  It is fortunate that he is my favourite as IDW have released a new comic book series dedicated to the adventures of Donald Duck.

This issue consists of four stories all by different writers and artists but I’m very happy that all talent have captured Donald’s fiery character perfectly both in the writing and the art work.

The first story in the issue (and also my favourite) is a 2 part story titled ‘Shellfish Motives’ and is both written and drawn by Disney Comics legend, Romano Scarpa.  This story finds Donald believing he can make it big as a newspaper journalist working for his Uncle Gideon McDuck.  Other stories include ‘Do it yourself’ with Donald attempting DIY (you can imagine how that will probably turn out) and ‘Wrecks, lies and videotape’ where Donald attempts to win a you’ve been framed-esque competition.

Although Donald is by far the best character Disney have to offer what would his stories be without his loveable nephews Huey Dewey and Louie and other characters that we should all be familiar with from Donald Duck cartoons.

IDW have produced a smashing first issue of Donald Duck and I look forward to many more.
