Comic Book Review – Justice League/Mighty Morphin Power Rangers #1

January 18, 2017 by Chris Cooper

Chris Cooper reviews Justice League/Mighty Morphin Power Rangers #1…

Two of comics greatest teams team up for the very first time! Something terrible has happened in Angel Grove! When the Command Center is breached and the teleporters are damaged, Zack is flung into another universe, where he’s mistaken for a villain by a mysterious masked vigilante. Can the other Power Rangers get to their friend in time to save him from Batman? Co-published with BOOM! Studios.

Ninja Turtles and the Ghostbusters.

Batman and the Ninja Turtles.

I though I’d seen it all when it came to crossovers. But no! There’s more!

Now we have the Justice League mixing it up with the Power Rangers. I swear publishers are getting together just to make events that get my inner 10 year old (who’s pretty damn similar to 31 year old me) horrendously excited.

But does the expectation match the end product?

Straight off the bat JL/MMPR gives us something to think about, and it’s not much longer before things happen and we get the classic ‘misunderstanding’ that begins the story proper. With only a few issues to tell the tale these crossovers can’t afford to spend time messing round, so explanations are sharp and fast. To its credit the story makes sense within itself; all this stuff could conceivably happen in a story containing teenage heroes and a group of near Gods.

I’m particularly keen on how the art style manages to make both sets of characters look part of the same world whilst also emphasising their differences. Compare Batman’s impressive build to the slenderness of the Rangers and you can tell the difference in not only age but experience straight away.

As an opening to what I assume will be a very busy and hopefully very entertaining crossover Justice League/Mighty Morphin Power Rangers #1 is a solid comic. There’s humour, action, good artwork, and a not unreasonable McGuffin. Issue #2 should get us into the meat of things if this series is to keep up the momentum.

Rating: 7/10
