It’s the final chapter of the crossover event of 2015! The dead have risen. Heroes have fallen. We come to the final climactic issue of Star Trek / Green Lantern: The Spectrum War. After the last month’s comic [review here] in which we saw Kirk and Co. arriving on the reconstituted planet Vulcan and being greeted by the reanimated corpses of the residents of the previously deceased world, things really aren’t looking too rosy for our heroes of the hour. With Ganthet being well and truly deceased it appears Nekron may also be ruling this Universe shortly.
As Kirk, Jordan and the other Ring-bearers either slug it out or blast themselves into a corner against the waves of on-coming Vulcan zombie-hordes, Spock’s undead mother begins to question his reasoning for not adding her to numerous rotting husks upon the floor; it takes an intervention from an external party to help Spock deal with his human-half’s predicament. With Nekron goading the remain members of this last stand, Kirk calls in an orbital strike, but this does little damage. It’s down to Sinestro to lead the charge in bringing the first blow to Nekron’s plan by snapping his scythe in half. Kirk is told that the White Lantern is the only way to destroy Nekron, to summon it every ring must be joined and for this they need a bearer to harness the entire spectrum of emotion.
Way back in my review for Issue #1 [see it here] I said, “I’ll be honest I’m not much of a Green Lantern fan, I never have been.” and I wasn’t. The idea of a crossover comic of my favourite Star Trek mixed with a Superhero I’ve never had an interest in – I’ll be honest – slightly bored me. However here I stand six issues on and each and every issue of this series has shot down my dislike for the Green Lantern in emerald flames!
I don’t think you’ll find a crossover comic that is as exciting as this anywhere this year. Each and every month Mike Johnson has delivered a chapter that has been so crammed with action and story that you almost feel you’ve been under-charged for what feels like a bumper-special. This given with the utterly perfect artwork painted across the pages by Angel Hernandez and Alejandro Sanchez makes each and every issue something amazing to hold. Also a special mention has to be made to Cat Staggs’ subscription cover which as you can see below is a homage to Bob Peaks “Motion Picture Poster”, it looks quite fantastic and anyone that receives it will no doubt agree.
As it’s the closing chapter I’ll also say thank you to those that never get the mentions they deserve with Neil Uyetake handling the letters and the editing of this marvellous series being carried out by Sarah Gaydos & Jim Chadwick. Thank you for making this series just excellent.
Star Trek / Green Lantern Issue #6 is a perfect closing chapter to an utterly-perfect series and if you’ve missed any of this I’d really recommend you pick up the trade paperback if and when it hits the shelves.
