Comic Book Review – Star Trek/Green Lantern #5

November 18, 2015 by Villordsutch

Villordsutch reviews Star Trek/Green Lantern #5…

The galactic civil war reaches a critical point as the Yellow Lantern Klingons, Orange Lantern Romulans, and Red Lantern Gorn fight for supremacy, with Hal Jordan, James T. Kirk, and the crew of the Enterprise caught in the middle! It’s a dark night for the Federation… and the arrival of Nekron and his Black Lanterns will only make things worse!

The really upsetting thing with the word “penultimate” is the fact that this begins to chime the final last order’s bell, you know something wonderful is soon coming to an end and quite frankly you don’t want it to – especially here in the Star Trek/Green Lantern:  The Spectrum War.  We’ve hit issue #5 and after last issue’s all out conflict kicking off between all the ring-bearers [review here], things were getting messy for Kirk & Co. and they still weren’t aware of the coagulating planet Vulcan (deceased).

With the battle raging between Hal Jordan, Sinestro and the other ringbearers, along with the Klingon Birds of Prey, Romulan Warbirds, an irate Gorn and a cluster of Federation ships, a messages echoes out to all ships in Starfleet informing their vessels to stay at Red Alert due to the inability to defend themselves in this battle.  The crew of the Enterprise, who were previously knocked into a fear induced unconsciousness by Sinestro, are still unresponsive forcing Hal Jordan to take control of the Enterprise, taking the ship into battle against the ring-charged enemy vessels; the power of Uhura’s worn ring is then used to bring around Kirk and his crew.  Only thanks to the intervention of the other Green ring holders suddenly appearing is Sinestro finally subdued, that and his want for more knowledge about Nekron’s return.

Aboard the Enterprise Sinestro is placed in the Brig, but even Hal Jordan points out he could simply leave at any time he wanted to.  When Nekron’s masterplan for this Universe is finally noticed, as Vulcan appears on the long-range sensors, a course is set for the planet immediately.  During these travels Scotty reveals – thanks to his investigation of the rings – that he’s managed to develop a rather crude variation of one of the rings which Sulu become the guinea pig for.  Finally arriving at Vulcan both the worst fears of the Enterprise crew and the Ring-bearers are shown to be true as Nekron reveals himself and his new Zombie Vulcan army.

Here is a comic charged with energy!  Mike Johnson has taken a few bolts of lightning and held them together with staples!  If you’ve just read a comic which has pulled you down to a low-level of glumness and you’re feeling somewhat melancholy then you need to pick up this book.  Not only is the writing at such an top-performance keeping you constantly buzzing for page one to the closing panel, but you have the superb artwork from Angel Hernandez and Alejandro Sanchez (art and colours) who need to do more Star Trek comics with IDW as of now.

Whatever you planned on buying today make sure you’re also planning on buying this too!

Rating: 10/10
