Comic Book Review – Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #62

September 24, 2016 by Chris Cooper

Chris Cooper reviews Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #62…

“Chasing Phantoms,” Part 2! One ally close to the Turtles faces grave danger while another makes a choice that will alter his life forever. Meanwhile the Turtles wonder if their path truly lies with the Foot Clan…

I’m left scratching my head. We’ve been with these characters for a long time. IDW’s TMNT will soon be the longest single run on the characters after-all. So why the hell are some of them doing things that have me screaming at the page!

Don’t get me wrong, I’m not complaining. It’s great. This cast of characters has a long time to change and grow. They’ve been through so much that it’s bound to make them think certain ways; sometimes very contradictory ways to each other.

It all boils down to one thing. If Mikey was the only one with doubts about Splinter and how being in charge of The Foot is playing out, he won’t be alone now. Count me for one.

Honestly guys, this is some seriously ropey territory Splinter is moving into and it worries me. It’s not as though this hasn’t been coming I guess. It’s testament to the overall quality of the series that I’m reacting in such a way.

Away from our favourite rat-dad, it’s always good to see some bro-to-bro conversations. There’s an honesty and emotion to them that always gives them a lot of weight. It wouldn’t be quite so good if we didn’t have such expressive faces though. Great artwork this month. One panel of Mikey in particular is fantastic.

Splinter isn’t the only one confusing me. What is Casey doing? After their atrocious mini-series I was glad Casey and April were side lined but we could do with catching up with them properly now. I’d like to get to know more about his current motivations other than ‘mopey’. Hopefully we’ll get more next month.

Sometimes people you think you know do things that make you think ‘what the hell?’. TMNT #62 made me want to give a few characters a good shake. I’d take that as a big win.
