Comic Book Review – TMNT: Bebop & Rocksteady Destroy Everything! #1

June 4, 2016 by Chris Cooper

Chris Cooper reviews TMNT: Bebop & Rocksteady Destroy Everything! #1…

After their defeat in TMNT #50, the dull-witted Bebop and Rocksteady, everyone’s favorite warthog and rhino mutants, are feeling dejected and without purpose. However, when they stumble across a time-travel scepter, they realize that their craziest, most destructive adventure awaits! Will the universe survive?

Nicely timed IDW. In the same week that Bebop and Rocksteady finally make they’re cinematic debut (they outshine Tokkar and Razar), the custodians of the TMNT comics license begin a weekly schedule for Bebop & Rocksteady Destroy Everything! It almost as though they had planned it all along…

We’ve had a villains one-shot with these guys before but I’m very curious how IDW will look at these guys when given more time. Will we get to see more beyond jokes, stupidity and brawn?

It might be due to the release schedule but there is a pretty odd arrangement regarding art duties. The style changes every few pages, which to be honest throws me a little bit. On the plus side it has given IDW the chance to do is bring a stellar lineup of artists on-board, including one of my all-time favourite TMNT artists, Sophie Campbell. We also have Ben Bates (who writes too), Dustin Weaver and Giannis Milogiannis.

It goes to show that you can hand the turtles over to people with very different styles and it can work. It’s just a touch jarring.

The script itself does an OK job of getting across a lot of information. It doesn’t go as far as setting up B&R as heroes of the story but it does give us a good look at them. The setup leads me to believe we’ll get to see more of the beyond destruction too. Their reaction to things feels right and they are really quite funny at times too.

One question I can’t answer yet is if this would come across better in a paperback. I guess time (pun intended) will tell.

Rating: 6/10
