Dark and twisted metroidvania Well Dweller coming in 2026

August 9, 2025 by Andrew Newton

Top Hat Studios and solo developer Kyle Thompson (Crypt Custodian, Islets) have announced their new dark, strange, twisted fairy-tale metroidvania, Well Dweller, will be coming to Nintendo Switch and PC in 2026. Battle through a whimsical, yet morbid, landscape, fighting terrifying creatures as a small bird with a matchstick.  Watch the new trailer below…..

Deep within the dark forest of a twisted fairy-tale kingdom is a well, and at the bottom of that well lives Glimmer, a tiny bird armed with a matchstick, and the only creature in the land that is brave enough to stand up to the wicked Queen. The Queen is a vicious and cruel person who intends to kill Glimmer’s family and make them part of her new royal gown (a bit like Cruelle de Vil and the dalmatians), and Glimmer must use his match to burn her before she can do that.

Taking the role of Glimmer, players will set out into the twisted fairy-tale landscape and battle an assortment of terrifying beasts, all whilst learning new abilities, discovering secrets, and expanding the world. There are plenty of dark nooks and crannies in this wretched queendom that hide powerful trinkets that are the key to survival.

Throughout Glimmer’s journey, players will encounter a cast of characters, such as Ilda, a small mouse on the run from the Queen, and Looter, a mysterious scavenger who seeks out items to steal.

Can you defeat the wicked queen and save Glimmer’s family for a happy ever after? Find out in 2026 on Nintendo Switch and PC.
