The Gears of War film is a big step closer to coming to fruition as Netflix has hired director David Leitch (John Wick, Bullet Train), to helm the video game adaptation, per The Hollywood Reporter.
Released in 2006 for the Xbox, Gears of War takes place on the planet Sera where humanity is on the verge of extinction after a decades-long war against the subterranean creatures known as the Locust Horde. In a last chance big for survival, former Gear soldier for the Coalition of Governments (COG) Marcus Fenix is taken out of prison and chosen to lead Delta Squad’s mission to destroy the Locust once and for all.
The script for the Gears of War movie is being written by Dune’s Jon Spaihts with Leitch and Kelly McCormick producing for 87North alongside Gears developer The Coalition.
Gears of War is among the most successful video game franchises with five games in the main series and one prequel released, along with a series of books and comics. Another prequel titled Gears of War: E-Day is in development and will explore the beginning of the Locust War as they break through Sera’s surface to annihilate humanity. Meanwhile, a remasters version of the original game, Gears of War: Reloaded, is coming to Xbox, PlayStation 5 and PC in August.
