DC announces Black Label series Wonder Woman Historia: The Amazons as part of 80th anniversary celebrations

July 16, 2021 by Ricky Church

This October marks the 80th anniversary of Wonder Woman, one of the most popular and recognizable superheroes from both DC and Marvel. DC is celebrating Wonder Woman’s anniversary with a variety of specials and other titles, but one which is cause for great attention is the DC Black Label series Wonder Woman Historia: The Amazons from writer Kelly Sue DeConnick and artist Phil Jiminez.

The series will explore the ancient history of the Amazons and has been something DeConnick has been working on for several years now. Book One will be released October 19 with Jimenez’s artwork. Book Two and Three will be released in Spring and Fall 2022 respectively with artist Gene Ha on Book Two and Nicola Scott on Three.

DeConnick went onto Twitter to express her excitement at the news’ announcement (especially timed with her birthday) and gave a preview as to the artwork from Jimenez, revealing the level of detail in one of the images she teased is one of the ‘simpler’ pages from Jimenez. She also revealed some other looks at the characters in her thread.

The synopsis for Wonder Woman Historia: The Amazons reads:

Best-selling DC talent Kelly Sue DeConnick (Aquaman) and Phil Jimenez (Wonder Woman By Phil Jimenez Omnibus) launches one of the most highly-anticipated releases of the year. Millennia ago, Queen Hera and the goddesses of the Olympian pantheon grew greatly dissatisfied with their male counterparts… and far from their sight, they put a plan into action. A new society was born, one never before seen on Earth, capable of wondrous and terrible things, but their existence could not stay secret for long. When a despairing woman named Hippolyta crossed the Amazons’ path, a series of events was set in motion that would lead to an outright war in heaven—and the creation of the Earth’s greatest guardian!

Wonder Woman Historia Book One will be released on October 19.
