Deadpool 3 first-look photo sees Hugh Jackman don the classic Wolverine suit

July 10, 2023 by Ricky Church

It has been over 20 years since Hugh Jackman first starred as Logan, aka the X-Men known as Wolverine, and in all that time one constant wish fans wanted to see was Wolverine’s classic yellow and blue costume on screen. Finally, with Jackman’s return to the role in the upcoming Deadpool 3 alongside Ryan Reynolds, it looks like fans will get their wish granted.

In a first look photo Jackman and Reynolds shared on each of their Instagram accounts, Deadpool and Wolverine are seen walking together with Wolverine in his classic X-Men suit as opposed to the typical black leather the films popularized. This marks the first time Jackman will be seen in the suit after wanting to bring it to screen in previous films while filmmakers thought it could not be translated well without looking goofy. The yellow and blue costume has been referenced in the Fox film series, with Cyclops remarking in X-Men if Logan would rather wear “yellow spandex” instead of the team’s black uniforms and being teased in an alternate ending to The Wolverine.

Deadpool 3 comes as the Merc with a Mouth is set to arrive in the Marvel Cinematic Universe after Disney’s acquisition of 20th Century Fox. Fox bought the film rights from Marvel in the 1990s during a period when the comic publisher faced bankruptcy, which is why the mutants never appeared in the MCU as the X-Men and Spider-Man franchises from Fox and Sony were separate from the MCU.

Not much is known about the film, but it appears Deadpool will travel across the multiverse (or with his meta fourth-wall breaking aspect, travelling through literal franchises) as he joins the MCU. Despite Jackman’s return as Logan, he has said Deadpool 3 would not alter the ending of 2017’s Logan, which at the time served as his final performance as the X-Men fan-favourite and gave Logan a definitive ending after his sacrifice to save his clone-daughter and several other young mutants. He has also teased he will play a dual role, promising we’ll see more than one version of Wolverine in Deadpool 3.

Joining Reynolds and Jackman in the multiversal trip is Jennifer Garner who will reprise her role as Elektra after nearly 20 years in the 2003 Daredevil film starring Ben Affleck and her own 2005 spin-off Elektra.

Deadpool 3 will be directed by Shawn Levy (Free Guy) and stars Reynolds alongside Deadpool veterans Stefan Kapacic (Colossus), Brianna Hildebrand (Negasonic Teenage Warhead), Morena Baccarin (Vanessa), Karan Soni (Dopinder), Leslie Uggams (Blind Al), Shioli Kutsuna (Yukio) and Rob Delaney (Peter) as well as Hugh Jackman as Wolverine, Jennifer Garner as Elektra and new additions Matthew Macfadyen (Succession) and Emma Corrin (The Crown) in as yet unspecified roles.

Deadpool 3 will be released May 3rd, 2024.
