Deadpool will remain R-rated in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, say screenwriters

October 18, 2019 by Gary Collinson

Ever since word of Disney’s interest in acquiring 20th Century Fox broke, fans have been speculating about if, how and when the X-Men and Fantastic Four characters might be introduced into Marvel Studios’ Cinematic Universe.

It’s been pretty much taken for granted that we’ll be see the two teams rebooted into the MCU, but there have been bigger question marks surrounding the Deadpool franchise due to the fact that a) it’s R-rated and therefore outside of Marvel’s wheelhouse, and b) the Ryan Reynolds incarnation has been so incredibly successful with a combined $1.562 billion from its first two instalments.

Well, it seems that signs may be pointing towards a continuation of the current series; firstly, we had Ryan Reynolds teasing a meeting with Marvel earlier this week, and now we have some comments from screenwriters Paul Wernick and Rhett Reese, who seem optimistic that it will be business as usual for the Merc with a Mouth.

“I think the party line and truth is we’re all still figuring it out,” said Wernick during an interview with EW to promote the release of Zombieland: Double Tap. “Marvel has promised to continue to let us play in the R-rated Deadpool universe, and the hope is that they will also let us veer into the MCU a little bit as well and play in that sandbox.”

Unlike the rest of Fox’s Marvel characters, it would be straight-forward to explain Wade Wilson’s jump from one universe to the other (simply have him do it himself as a throwaway gag), and the door would always be open for a toned-down PG-13 version to make guest appearances elsewhere in the MCU beyond his own R-rated solo movies.
