Deadpool’s Ryan Reynolds “promises” he isn’t in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness

February 20, 2022 by Gary Collinson

Despite regaining the rights to the characters following Disney’s Fox acquisition in 2019, Marvel Studios has kept schtum with regards to any plans it has for the X-Men, save for the fact that development is underway on a third instalment in the Deadpool franchise with Ryan Reynolds on board to reprise his fan favourite role as the Merc with a Mouth.

That changed this past Superbowl Sunday however as we got our very first hint of the Children of the Atom within the MCU (WandaVision’s Ralph Bohner aside) with a rather familiar voice popping up in the latest trailer for Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness and teasing an appearance from Patrick Stewart’s Professor Charles Xavier.

It had been reported recently that one of the reasons for the recent – and rather extensive – reshoots on Multiverse of Madness was the fact that Marvel wanted to up the film’s cameo quota as a result of the enormous success of Spider-Man: No Way Home. And, with the Doctor Strange sequel being all about the multiverse, it would seem an ideal opportunity to have Wade Wilson make the jump from Fox’s X-verse to the MCU… although according to Reynolds, that’s not going to happen.

“I’m really not in the movie,” said Reynolds, when asked by Variety about the possibility of a Deadpool cameo in the Marvel sequel. “I’m promising, I’m not in the movie.”

So, going by Reynolds’ comments, we shouldn’t expect to see Deadpool popping up alongside Professor X… although as we saw with Andrew Garfield and No Way Home, promises mean very little when it comes to Marvel, Disney, and NDAs. Nevertheless, hopefully we won’t have too long to wait until the return of the Merc with a Mouth, although Reynolds also remained tight-lipped on Deadpool 3, stating simply that it is “coming along”.

In Marvel Studios’ Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, the MCU unlocks the Multiverse and pushes its boundaries further than ever before. Journey into the unknown with Doctor Strange, who, with the help of mystical allies both old and new, traverses the mind-bending and dangerous alternate realities of the Multiverse to confront a mysterious new adversary.

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is directed by Sam Raimi and stars Benedict Cumberbatch (Doctor Strange), Benedict Wong (Wong), Rachel McAdams (Christine Palmer), Chiwetel Ejiofor (Mordo), (Nicodemus West), Elizabeth Olsen (Scarlet Witch) as well as MCU newcomer Xochitl Gomez (The Baby-Sitters Club) as America Chavez.

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is set for release on May 6th 2022.
