Comic Book Review – Dexter’s Laboratory #2

May 24, 2014 by Andy Naylor

Andy Naylor reviews Dexter’s Laboratory #2…

“With his sister Dee Dee removed from existence, Dexter is now an only child! He’s finally able to work in his lab unhindered by her foolish games, and locates the one thing needed to reach his full potential – – but it’s in another dimension! As Dexter attempts to reach it, he finds his dream is about to turn into his greatest nightmare!”

Having finally grown tired of his interfering, irritating, experiment destroying sister, Dee-Dee, Dexter (boy genius) has finally found a way to remove her, and her meddlesome ways, forever. The Dreamwish-o-tron 5000 has removed Dee-Dee from existence, leaving the boy genius free to pursue his life work without interference.

Despite being born as a kids light-hearted cartoon, this issue of Dexter’s Laboratory poses a serious moral question regarding the choices we make. The very thing that makes you made and affects your life, in a seemingly negative way, could be the very thing that has such a positive impact upon how you lead your life and be the making of.

Dexter’s Laboratory #2 explores this issue and how the boy genius withers without his big sister around to keep him on his toes.

Very much like the cartoon, the art is bright, garish (the next issue has the potential to induce some kind of colour related fit in any reader) and very enjoyable. In reviewing the previous issue I commented on that it feels like reading a story board of the cartoon series, it still feels this way and I can only commend the writers/artists on their dedication and clear fondness for the source material. It’ll be interesting to see how Dexter handles the realm where he finds himself in the next issue; the potential comedy fits of anger from our little ginger scientist could be outstanding.

A good, solid, entertaining read – well worthy of spending a little of your time on, especially if you loved the cartoon series.
