Director Reed Morano on being linked to Supergirl movie, plot and villain rumours surface

September 16, 2018 by Gary Collinson

Back in August, it was announced that Warner Bros. and DC Films are working on a Supergirl movie, with a subsequent report stating that the studios will be looking for a female filmmaker to bring Kara Zor-El back to the big screen.

Since then, there’s been a lot of rumours linking Emmy Award-winner Reed Morano (The Handmaid’s Tale) to the director’s chair; however, as Morano has explained to The Observer, it seems these reports could be nothing more than the usual internet speculation.

“Actually, it’s funny — someone brought it to my attention and a couple friends of mine were like, ‘Are you doing Supergirl?’ and I said, ‘What are you talking about?’” said Morano. “I asked my agent ‘What the hell is this?’ and they said, ‘It’s nothing, ignore it.’”

However, Morano did go on to tell THR that she’s open to the prospect, stating: “I like the idea of doing something new every time, so I don’t say no to any idea. I’m always thinking [how] I can bring something new to the table that still feels authentic to the story, not [doing something] just for the sake of doing something new. But if there’s a reason for me to do [Supergirl] in particular, then I would like to do it.”

Meanwhile, in other Supergirl news (or possible internet speculation), Discussing Film has posted a brief outline of the plot, which reads:

“The film will follow a teenage Kara in high school (similar to Spider-Man: Homecoming), some of the first half of the film will take place on Krypton with the Earth portion of the film set to take place in the 70s. Brainiac is also rumoured to be the villain.”

As yet, there’s no word on when we can expect to see movement on the Supergirl movie, but this week’s reports about Henry Cavill’s DCEU exit as Superman suggested that it is now being seen as a priority within Warner Bros. and DC Films.
