Deadline is reporting that Disney has snapped up a pitch for Sade, a live-action fairy tale feature from writers Ola Shokunbi and Lindsey Reed Palmer, which tells the story of an African princess.
According to the site, Sade follows “a young African girl named Sadé who, when her kingdom is threatened by a mysterious evil force, accepts her newly discovered magical warrior powers to protect herself and her people. With the help of the kingdom’s prince, Sadé embarks on an adventure that will allow her to embrace what makes her special and save the kingdom.”
Dope director Rick Famuyiwa is attached to produce Sade, which will mark the first time that a Disney Princess movie is led by a female African character. Shokunbi and Palmer are writing the screenplay, while a director is yet to become attached.
