Disney pulls Mulan from release schedule, delays other titles including Avatar and Star Wars

July 23, 2020 by EJ Moreno

In news that is all too common for film fans now, another movie looks like it is off the table for 2020. Mulan is no longer on the theatrical release calendar for Disney, as the United States sees a surge of cases in California and other states.

Mulan was set to open on August 21st, but will no longer see its release this summer. The film initially had a late March release and was then pushed back until July 24th. There’s no word now as to when Niki Caro’s adventure epic will open.

“Over the last few months, it’s become clear that nothing can be set in stone when it comes to how we release films during this global health crisis, and today that means pausing our release plans for Mulan as we assess how we can most effectively bring this film to audiences around the world,” a Disney spokesperson said in a statement.

The removal of Mulan from Disney’s schedule is just one of many changes to their release calendar. All of the currently scheduled blockbusters like the Avatar and Star Wars films are delayed a year. Avatar 2 will now open in December 2022 instead of its original December 2021 release, followed by Avatar 3 in 2024, Avatar 4 in 2026 and Avatar 5 in 2028, while the next three Star Wars films are now set for 2023, 2025 and 2027.

Check out the other changes below:

The Personal History of David Copperfield moves to August 28th, 2020.

Death on the Nile is delayed two weeks to October 23rd, 2020.

The Empty Man now opens on December 4th, 2020.

Wes Anderson’s The French Dispatch was previously dated October 16th, 2020, but no longer has a date.

Antlers is now scheduled for February 19th, 2021.

Ridley Scott’s The Last Duel will now open wide on October 15th, 2021. This is a drastic delay as the film was originally opening to a limited release this Christmas, with an expansion happening in January for the award season.
