Black Widow moves to 2021 as Disney pushes back its entire film slate

September 23, 2020 by EJ Moreno

While we knew this was coming, it’s still shocking to see. Disney has officially pushed back its entire slate of upcoming films, some even moving as far as an entire year away. The fall blockbusters from Disney, such as Marvel’s Black Widow, the West Side Story remake, and Kenneth Branagh’s Death on the Nile, have all been moved back by several months.

Black Widow, starring Scarlett Johansson, will now move from November 6th to May 7th, 2021. The other film from Marvel Studios originally slated for this year prior to the pandemic, Eternals, will move to November 5th 2021, from February 12th, 2021. Lastly from Marvel, the still in-production Shang Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, Marvel’s first film with an Asian lead, has moved from May 7th, 2021 to July 9th, 2021.

The delay of Black Widow means there’ll be no Marvel Cinematic Universe movies out in 2020, while the Disney+ series The Falcon and the Winter Soldier has also been pushed to 2021. Nevertheless, we do have WandaVision hitting the streaming service this December.

The rest of the Phase Four slate remains unchanged for the moment, with Spider-Man 3 on December 17th 2021, Thor: Love and Thunder on February 11th 2020, and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness on March 25th 2022.

Death on the Nile will move to December 18th, 2020, vacating its original October 23rd premiere. Adrian Lyne’s thriller Deep Water, starring real-life couple Ben Affleck and Ana de Armas, will no longer open on November 13th, 2020, instead moving to August 13th, 2021. And in the biggest move so far, Steven Spielberg’s West Side Story moves from December 18th, 2020 to December 10th, 2021.

Surprisingly enough, though, Disney is allowing the upcoming Pixar film, Soul, to keep its intended November 20th release date.

In Marvel Studios’ action-packed spy thriller “Black Widow,” Natasha Romanoff, aka Black Widow, confronts the darker parts of her ledger when a dangerous conspiracy with ties to her past arises. Pursued by a force that will stop at nothing to bring her down, Natasha must deal with her history as a spy and the broken relationships left in her wake long before she became an Avenger.

Black Widow is being directed by Cate Shortland (Lore) and sees Scarlett Johansson reprising her role as Natasha Romanoff alongside Florence Pugh (Fighting With My Family) as Yelena Belova, O-T Fagbenle (The Handmaid’s Tale) as Mason, David Harbour (Stranger Things) as Alexei Shostakov/Red Guardian, Rachel Weisz (The Favourite) as Melina Vostokoff/Iron Maiden, and Ray Winstone (Sexy Beast) and Olivier Richters (The King’s Man) in as-yet-unrevealed roles.
