Doctor Strange described as “psychedelic” and “different” by film’s cinematographer

August 6, 2015 by Justin Cook

While the theatrical release of Doctor Strange is still over a year away, Ben Davis, the film’s cinematographer, makes it sound like both a faithful comic book adaptation and truly unique Marvel Cinematic Universe film.

As reported by ScreenDaily, Davis described what fans can expect from Doctor Strange when speaking at a BAFTA Masterclass in London. He said, “It has a very psychedelic grounding, and it’s not your typical Marvel action movie. Most of the work within it is about other dimensions. And I described it, I think, when I was talking to Marvel as Marvel’s Fantasia, in a way, because it’s so sort of out there and different to everything else that they’ve done.”

Davis went on to compare the film’s look to the work of famous Dutch graphic artist M.C. Escher, who was known for his optical illusions and mind-bending art. The cinematographer even admitted to looking at a couple early visuals for the film and saying, “well how the hell do we shoot that?”

Lastly, he added, “I can’t really say much more about it, I’m afraid. But I think it’ll be really interesting, and it’s a very dark movie, I’m pleased to say.”

In the past, Davis has worked as a cinematographer on such Marvel Cinematic Universe films as Avengers: Age of Ultron and Guardians of the Galaxy.

Doctor Strange is set for release on October 28, 2016 in the UK and November 4, 2016 in the US. Scott Derrickson (Sinister) is directing a cast that so far includes Benedict Cumberbatch (Sherlock) as Stephen Strange, Tilda Swinton (Snowpiercer) as The Ancient One and Chiwetel Ejiofor (12 Years a Slave) as Baron Mordo.
