Doug Liman gives an update on Edge of Tomorrow 2 status

January 14, 2021 by Matt Rodgers

While doing the rounds for his pandemic heist movie Lockdown (read our ★★★ review here), Edge of Tomorrow director Doug Liman has been speaking to Collider about the current status of the sequel to his Tom Cruise time-loop blockbuster.

The oft-discussed follow-up to one of 2014’s best movies has occupied the breaking news pages for a few years now, and sadly it sounds as though were all trapped in our own Live Die Repeat when it comes to knowing exactly when it could become a reality.

Liman told Collider “it’s a very high bar because that was a really challenging film to make”, continuing to say that he would like to take a low-key approach to any sequel, “I’ve always been interested in the idea of a sequel being more character-driven than the first film, because that’s not how things are normally done. That’s been my approach when developing the sequel and because Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt are such phenomenal actors. I get sometimes the sequel just has to have more firepower or more explosions but no visual effect is going to top what you’re going to get from a great scene performed by Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt.”

And according to Liman that’s where the fate of the sequel seems to lie, in the hands of Cruise and Blunt. He said “That’s pretty much how Hollywood works. The stars are the gatekeepers. If you can get Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt to commit to the movie, it’s going to happen.”

The exclusive report also makes it clear that the script isn’t even finished yet, but Liman offers some reassurance with the fact that the original script wasn’t ready when they started shooting that, and that turned out ok.

You can read the full report over at Collider, but in the meantime don’t forget to let us know what you think about this news and head to our social channels for more @FlickeringMyth…
