Dracula reimagining The Bride casts Nathalie Emmanuel and Garrett Hedlund

May 22, 2021 by Ricky Church

Another film inspired by Bram Stoker’s classic gothic horror novel Dracula is on the way as Deadline reports that Nathalie Emmanuel (Game of Thrones) and Garret Hedlund (The United States vs. Billie Holiday) will star in Screen Gems’ The Bride from director Jessica M. Thompson (The End).

The Bride is “a contemporary horror thriller that tells the story of a young woman who is courted and swept off her feet, only to realize a gothic conspiracy is afoot.” It seems the focus will be on one of Dracula’s brides, women he turned into vampires and keeps as his servants and provides them with men, and possibly infants and children, to feed upon.

The script was originally written by Blair Butler (Polaroid) with Thompson having made revisions with Emile Gladstone producing. According to Deadline, Screen Gems is apparently very excited about the idea and see a potential franchise of its own. Production is being fast-tracked with cameras expected to begin rolling at the of the summer.

Stories on Dracula and vampires are nothing new and a huge part of genre horror, but this now marks the fourth project that has recently been greenlit involving Dracula or elements from Stoker’s classic. There is André Øvredal’s The Last Voyage of the Demeter starring Corey Hawkins which is based on a single chapter in Bram Stoker’s Dracula, Chris McKay’s Renfield about Dracula’s eponymous servant, a contemporary Blumhouse adaptation from Karyn Kusama, and a new film from Universal and recent Nomadland Oscar-winner and Marvel’s Eternals director Chloe Zhao, who is taking the story in a new direction as a “futuristic, sci-fi Western”.

What do you think of a new movie or potential franchise based on Dracula’s brides? Do you think we’re getting too many  Dracula-inspired stories? Let us know on our social channels at @flickeringmyth…
