Dwayne Johnson looks to be becoming a favourite of A24, as the film company has signed the actor for another major project. Per Deadline, Johnson has boarded Breakthrough, writer Zeke Goodman’s new psychological thriller. The film has yet to hire a director.
The story is set in turn-of-the-millennium Southern California and follows an alienated young man who falls under the influence of a motivational guru. The guru’s intoxicating charm masks his morally questionable methods of manipulation and his own concealed darkness.
Deadline notes “Johnson will play the supporting role of the guru, with casting still underway for the lead role and other supporting parts.”
A24 will produce and finance Breakthrough. Stacey Sher’s Shiny Penny Productions will produce alongside Johnson and Dany Garcia’s Seven Bucks Productions. Jacob Epstein and Justin Wolf will executive produce via Lighthouse Management and Media.

Johnson has recently teamed up with A24 for a new Benny Safdie-helmed film, The Smashing Machine, where he portrays UFC fighter Mark Kerr. Although he’s presumably not turning his back on his blockbusters, Johnson seems to want to stretch himself, and the usual output from a distributor like A24 seems to offer the perfect platform for that.
