Edgar Wright discusses Ant-Man’s mix of action and humour

November 20, 2013 by admin

British filmmaker Edgar Wright is currently doing the press rounds for his most recent film, the final instalment of the Cornetto trilogy, The World’s End, so over the next week or so expect to hear plenty about his upcoming Marvel adaptation Ant-Man, which is set to launch Phase Three of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in 2015. We’ll be speaking to Edgar next week and will do our best to get a few words on Ant-Man, but Entertainment Tonight has kicked things off by asking him how he intends on making the miniature hero stand out in a packed summer of superheroes which also includes The Avengers: Age of Ultron, The Fantastic Four and Batman vs. Superman…

“I want to make him into a badass [laughs],” states Wright. “No, I always liked that comic and I always thought it would be an interesting thing to see in live-action. That’s why I [showed] that Comic-Con test that we did for Marvel, to show this fight scene like a proof of concept, like this is what the action is going to look like. I think a lot of people who maybe don’t know the character sort of see that test and go, ‘Oh, right, I get it. It’s like an action film,’ so that’s the idea. I think people will be surprised by what kind of movie it is, and so in that respect it’s something that I know is going to stand out because it’s got a very different story and is a very different [film].”

Wright then went on to touch upon the film’s tone, revealing that Ant-Man should fit in nicely with the previous instalments of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in terms of its balance between humour and action: ” I think the Marvel movies are funny, you know? I think generally the Iron Man films and The Avengers are funny. They’re not ever in the comedy section, but they are funny and entertaining, so I think it’ll be something in a similar vein to that.”

Ant-Man is currently set for release on July 31st 2015.
