Even Russell T. Davies is unsure about the future of Doctor Who

June 22, 2025 by EJ Moreno

Even if Doctor Who showrunner Russell T. Davies doesn’t know what the future holds for the series, there’s a hopeful attitude that pours from his recent sentiments.

As Doctor Who enters uncharted waters, given its recent re-inclusion of Billie Piper in the series as a potential Sixteenth Doctor, it always seems like there’s a small group waiting for its downfall. With Doctor Who yet to be picked up for a third season by the BBC and Disney+, it seems like all hope could be lost, and Davies doesn’t know what will come next.

While penning a column for the latest issue of Doctor Who Magazine, Davies admitted that even he doesn’t know where the series is headed.

“We don’t know what’s happening yet,” Davies wrote. This came as he was announcing that he would be taking “a pause” in writing for the publication, “while everyone works that out.” But the creator remained upbeat, adding, “Hopefully, we’ll have news soon… There are pathways leading to potential futures — we’ve still got the mystery of that bright and blazing ending, ‘Oh, hello,’ yes indeed, hello Billie!”

In closing, he emphatically declared: “Doctor Who will never end.”
