Exclusive Interview – Yorgos Lanthimos on directing The Killing of a Sacred Deer

October 31, 2017 by Freda Cooper

Yorgos Lanthimos’ much anticipated follow up to The Lobster (2015) arrives in British cinemas this week.  Part Greek tragedy, part horror and part morality tale, The Killing Of A Sacred Deer was written by Lanthimos and regular collaborator, Efthimis Filippou, winning them the Best Screenplay award at Cannes.

Their twisted tale watches the well-ordered life of a successful surgeon (Colin Farrell) and his family as it falls apart spectacularly.  The reason isn’t immediately apparent, but a secret friendship with a troubled teenager (Barry Keoghan) sets off a devastating chain of events.

Lanthimos spoke to Flickering Myth’s Freda Cooper just before the film’s gala screening at this year’s London Film Festival.  He talks about filming in English rather than his native Greek, casting Alicia Silverstone in the movie and why he enjoys working with Colin Farrell – so much so that they’re trying to get a third project green lit.

The Killing Of A Sacred Deer is out in UK cinemas on 3rd November.  Read our review here.
