Fifty Shades of Grey: The most viewed trailer of 2014

July 29, 2014 by Gavin Logan

Having only been released to the world on July 24th, the first trailer for the hotly anticipated Fifty Shades of Grey has now hit well over 36.4 million views on YouTube to become the most viewed trailer of the year so far, surely proving that it’s not only bored housewives who are curious about it.

The trailer dethroned Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles which had been the previous high with 31 million views back in March. The trailers for Gareth Edwards Godzilla reboot and Michael Bay’s Transformers 4: Age of Extinction share the third spot with 26.3 million views in it’s first week of release. Both meagre numbers in comparison considering how successful both blockbusters were.

Fifty Shades of Grey is based on the “controversial” novel of the same name by E.L. James that took the world by storm a few years ago, about an innocent young woman who falls for her boss and becomes entwined in his secretive, sexual fetishes. Jamie Dornan (The Fall, Once Upon A Time) stars as Christian Grey with Anastasia Steele being played by Dakota Johnson (Need for Speed). It’s due to hit the big screen on February 13th 2015.
