The final trailer for Assassin’s Creed landed online yesterday ahead [watch it here] of its release in December (or January if you’re British). The first trailer didn’t get a great reaction from our team [read it here], so how will this one fare?
Darryl Griffiths: Another unfortunate choice in music with the trailers for this, but those action sequences though! In Fassy I Trust!
Sean Wilson: Michael Fassbender, Marion Cotillard and Jeremy Irons look to inject a little bit of class and the concept itself looks to allow for more imagination than the standard video game adaptation, but I’m a bit concerned about the oversaturated look of it though – can we expect this to be as visually stunning as Macbeth?
Matthew Skeen: I’m kind of hoping that this trailer has encompassed most of the main bits of exposition but my heart tells me we’ll get too much of that in the final product and too little of the ‘in Animus’ stuff which is what people want. That said, it is cast well and the sequences do look incredible so if they manage enough of that I’ll be sold.
Chris Haydon: Sorry, but this looks completely dreadful. A serious case of January movie right here. The colour palette alone is so bland, let alone the inept music choices, outdated visual effects and those GOD-AWFUL haircuts. I adore Marion Cotillard, but she looks like someone who couldn’t afford to do Mia Wallace cosplay correctly.
Villordsutch: Still this does nothing for me. I see the big names and hear the crude phrase, “All fur coat and no knickers”. Perhaps however I’m watching rather this biased as I’ve never been a fan of Assassin’s Creed and I have an inherent dread of most movie adaptions.
Eric Bay-Andersen: Nice to see a bit more story and context. Fassbender and Jeremy Irons do their cool/icy thing well, but from the few shots we see of her in this trailer I’m not sold on Marion Cotillard yet (fine actress though she is). Like with the previous trailer the choice of music was weird, but some of the stunt work looks impressive. Since I’m not really a fan of the games I’m more intrigued by this film than excited, but this trailer pushed me a bit more towards excited.
Chris Cooper: I’m looking forward to giving it a go. I do love a bit of Fassbender and loved some of the earlier games. This looks to be the right balance of respectful and fresh at least.
Jordan J. Jones: I haven’t followed this one much, but this left me feeling optimistic. I can see the cast fully committing themselves to the story, which is a feeling that I never had with Warcraft. I appreciate that they are trying to go as practical as a movie like this will allow and I have no doubt the performances will be excellent. My main worries at this point are if we are seeing the best this movie has to offer in the trailer, and if this will resonate with a general audience. The music is awful, to be certain, but I do wonder if this could be the first “great” videogame movie.
Eddy Gardiner: Less assuring than the teaser but still looks like it might finally be a decent video game movie.
Luke Owen: I always like when people use the term ‘we finally get a good video game movie’ like you’ve all forgotten Mortal Kombat.
Kris Wall: I watched Mortal Kombat again recently, and it’s still great. That Johnny Cage vs Scorpion fight is the height of cinematic video game adaptation!
Ricky Church: I’ve only played the first two video games, but this looks like a pretty solid adaptation and I like how this emulates the look of the games without going too overboard. The fight choreography looks really good and I’m hoping there will be enough of the Spanish Inquisition in it rather than the modern day stuff. Fassbender looks the part and I’m sure he’ll be good in it, as will Jeremy Irons and Marion Cotillard. Again, though, wrong kind of music for the trailer, but overall Assassin’s Creed looks decent enough.
Tony Black: I liked that a lot less than the teaser. What’s that shitty pop rock draped all over it for? Irons calls them the ‘Assassins Creed’ too, which is just plain wrong for a start, and I’m sure Cotillard says ‘Aminus’ instead of ‘Animus’. Nitpicks, but these things matter to fans like me. Beyond that, my opinion hasn’t changed – looks gorgeous, great cast, just needs a good script and we won’t know that until it drops.
