June 29, 2021 by Amie Cranswick

The first trailer has debuted for The Many Saints of Newark, the upcoming prequel to HBO’s celebrated crime drama series The Sopranos.

Directed by Alan Taylor, the film stars Michael Gandolfini as a young Tony Soprano and gives us a look at the formative years of the New Jersey gangster played by Michael’s real-life father, the late James Gandolfini, in the acclaimed TV series.

Young Anthony Soprano is growing up in one of the most tumultuous eras in Newark’s history, becoming a man just as rival gangsters begin to rise up and challenge the all-powerful DiMeo crime family’s hold over the increasingly race-torn city. Caught up in the changing times is the uncle he idolizes, Dickie Moltisanti, who struggles to manage both his professional and personal responsibilities—and whose influence over his nephew will help make the impressionable teenager into the all-powerful mob boss we’ll later come to know: Tony Soprano.

The Many Saints of Newark stars Michael Gandolfini, Alessandro Nivola, Leslie Odom Jr., Jon Bernthal, Corey Stoll, Billy Magnussen, Michela De Rossi, John Magaro, Ray Liotta. and Vera Farmiga.

The Many Saints of Newark arrives on HBO Max on October 1st in the US and in cinemas on October 22nd in the UK.
