Five Nights at Freddy’s movie producer Jason Blum says they “haven’t quite figured it out” yet

November 12, 2020 by Liam Waddington

Although development on the Five Nights at Freddy’s movie adaptation has been ongoing for years now, it seems like the project is moving slower than expected.

In an interview with Inverse, producer Jason Blum revealed that while work is still continuing on the Five Nights at Freddy’s movie, the creative team “haven’t quite figured it out” yet.

“It’s still active,” Blum said. “We haven’t quite figured it out, but we’re getting closer every day.”

He added, “The story is the big challenge. You know, Five Nights at Freddy’s should have been easier because there are books, there’s a lot of lore and storytelling. For a video game, I think it has more storytelling than almost any other. But still, the story goes down so many rabbit holes. It goes down so many different directions. It’s big. Choosing which part to tell the first time out of the gate — and how to tell it — has been tricky.”

Although we are unaware of when the film will begin production, we do know Chris Columbus (Home Alone, Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone) is still attached to be the director of the film with Scott Cawthon, the video game series’ creator, still on board to write the project.

The last major update on the film was back in 2018 when Cawthorn revealed to Polygon that he had a script written but decided to scrap the idea for one he liked better – resulting in development on the movie being pushed back further.

“I had a script written,” Cawthon said. “Jason [Blum] liked it, and Chris Columbus liked it too, but I tossed it. I had a different idea for it, one that I liked better. I take responsibility for this delay; it’s my fault. [I’m] determined to find the right story.”
